John S. Shelton was a professor at Pomona College where I went after high school and before medical school, and that is where and when I first met him. We were both on the Pomona College Alumni Council in San Diego for many years after his retirement from Pomona College and move to San Diego/5(19).

Shelton was Geology illustrated good geologist, a good pilot, and a pioneer in geologic aerial photography. His book educated generations of young geologists, including me.
Geology Illustrated was chosen as one of the top science books of the 20th century by American Scientist magazine. This is the best single book of geologic aerial photography ever published/5. The collection consists of photographic prints of most of the images used in Shelton's textbook, "Geology Illustrated." The aerial photographs for this book are supplemented with airbrush drawings composed by John's brother, cartographer and artist Hal Shelton.
